A Sneaky Forager
A Sneaky Forager

"We had a 3-foot sub sitting on the kitchen table during a party. Everyone was downstairs and my buddy Kevin and I came upstairs only to find my 80-pound chocolate lab Monty up on his hind legs snarfing down as much of that sub as he could get.

I yelled his name and he started eating faster. I guess he knew that he didn't have much time. But that wasn't the smartest thing. I grabbed him by the collar and ushered him into my room as punishment. As I sat him on the dog bed, I heard a kind of squishing noise. I lifted up a fold of the comforter to find he had stashed a rather large amount of deli meat from the sub in his bed already." --Reddit

Sign This Dog Up For The Long Jump!
Sign This Dog Up For The Long Jump!

"My dog was not allowed on the carpet when he first came to us, only on the hardwood floors. He hated when we sat in the family room, which was carpeted. A few weeks in, he started putting one paw on the carpet as he waited. Weeks later, it was the front of his body, then he'd lie down completely on the first step, leaving only his back paw on the wood floor. One day we carried him to the couch to hang out with us. I guess he took that to mean that the couch was okay, but the carpet was not.

Later, we heard a mad dash of tiny claws, and a black missile comes out of nowhere and lands on the couch. He had run the length of the hardwood and jumped OVER the carpet to the couch. It was seriously about a 6-8 foot jump, and he landed it. From that day on, the carpet law was over as a reward for his determination and cleverness." --Reddit

Elsie The Hero

"When I was 16 months old, my dog Elsie bit my mother to wake her up, barking like a mad girl. My mom was pretty angry at first, but because the dog was so insistent, she decided to check out what was going on. She went through the whole house, visiting my room last. She noticed that the light on my carbon monoxide alarm in the room was blinking, but no sound was coming out. She rushed me and my older brother to the hospital, and it turned out that I had very severe CO poisoning. Without my dog, I would have died at a very young age!" --Reddit

"I always take my computer to work with me. The last thing I do before I leave is put my laptop into a laptop sleeve. My dog used to lay on it when he saw me in a rush to go. Now he drags it under the couch when he sees me dressing. I guess his logic is that I won't leave without it. And if I even touch my running shoes, he starts going crazy and grabs his leash." --Reddit

"Our neighbors had two dogs, one of which only had three legs. My dog and their dogs loved to play together, and since my dog could clear our 4-5 foot fence without a problem, they would play all day. I guess one day they got bored of playing in their yard and wanted to come enjoy ours, but since the dog with 3 legs could not jump over the fence, they all worked together to move the stacks of firewood to make a stair-like system for the other dog to walk on. Everyone was amazed, and we were to amused to take it down." --Reddit

Sweet, Sweet Freedom
Sweet, Sweet Freedom

"Every morning when my mom goes outside to fetch the mail, my dog jumps up and flips the deadbolt on the front door, locking her out. He waits at the window until she comes to the door, at which point he runs in circles for a few seconds, enjoying his freedom. He then flips the lock back and carries on with his day." --Reddit

Saved In The Nick Of Time
Saved In The Nick Of Time

"I lived on a busy-ish corner and my dog loved to sit and watch the street out the window for hours. One time he started barking, whining, scratching and going crazy at the door. He usually barked when people walked by, but he was hysterical. I went over to see what he was upset about and there was a baby, maybe a year old, walking up the middle of the street by himself. He had one of those toys that babies can push around in front of them when they're learning to walk. This kid was almost to the busy intersection and I ran out into the street and scooped him up and walked with him back in the direction he came from. His mother was running up the street freaking out." --Reddit

Who Said Dogs And Ducks Can't Be Friends?

"My family was out fishing one day, and like usual, my dog was just out doing her own thing. Later she comes bounding toward us with something in her mouth. As she gets closer, we see it's a baby duck and we start yelling at her to drop it. She keeps running toward us with the proudest look on her face, and gingerly places the baby duck wrapped in fishing line and one of those plastic can holders and pushes it toward us with her nose. She hung around watching us untangle it, looking at it curiously and trying to smell it. We put the baby duck back in the water when another group of ducks swam by. She looked so proud." --Reddit

A Doggie Metal Detector

"I was hiking with four of my dogs in the countryside, and when I got back to my pickup I noticed that my keys were gone. I walked to a nearby farm and called my mom to bring the spare keys out so I could get home. When she arrived, she was quite upset because the keys I had lost included a fancy remote car starter. She said we had to go looking, but I had covered about 7 kms of fields that were covered in snow. There was no chance we'd find them. I called my black lab over and waved the spare keys in front of his nose and told him to 'go find the keys'. He bounded off and came back two minutes later with the lost keys in his mouth." --Reddit

Scaring Off Strange Men
Scaring Off Strange Men

"My mom had my dog outside while she was doing yard work. This guy came walking pretty fast out of the wooded area between our house and startled my mom. He said he was a meter-reader for the electric company. As soon as he appeared, my dog -- the sweetest, most gentle dog in the world -- started going nuts. I mean like barking, growling, arching his back, everything. My mom apologized and he said it was okay then took off down the street.

30 seconds after he disappeared around the corner, two cop cars went flying down the street in the same direction as the guy. Within a couple minutes there was a helicopter flying all around the area. Turns out the guy had tried to rob the bank in the shopping center behind our house and had made his escape out the back way. My dog just knew." --Reddit

He Earned That Sandwich!
He Earned That Sandwich!

"My dog is a spaniel, so he has good retrieving instincts and runs off with anything—shoes in particular. One day, my sister and I are eating sandwiches on the sofa. He looks at us, realizes begging isn't working, runs off, and returns waving a shoe proudly. I get up to get it away him, putting my sandwich and plate down on my seat as I do so. As I make my way over to him, he ditches the shoe and dashed over to the other side of the room and starts eating my sandwich. It was too amazing to tell him off for." --Reddit

"I taught my dog to fetch me a beer on command. He opens the mini fridge and brings me one wherever I am. We haven't worked out how to close it yet though. He loves doing it, and the other day I was a bit bummed and suffering from insomnia, so I took a couple of days off and spent them lying in bed. He didn't know what was going on. Every couple of hours he'd fetch me an unasked for beer. Charlie is such a good dog." --Reddit

"My house has one of those water cooler things you see in offices. One day, my family was out of the house, doing whatever. When we get back home, we found that our dog had pushed her bowl over to the cooler and was pushing the buttons to get water from it." --Reddit

Going A Little Overboard
Going A Little Overboard

"My Golden taught himself to get the paper from our driveway every morning after watching my dad do it. We lived in a really small town, so everybody just let dogs just run around outside all day without leashes or fences. In the morning my dad would just open the front door, wait a few minutes, then the dog would be back with the paper. This worked until his master-pleasing hyperdrive kicked in and he started coming back with everybody else's papers too." --Reddit

Doorbells Are For Dogs Too
Doorbells Are For Dogs Too

"My dog we had growing up was an inside dog. We would walk him once a day, but the rest of the time we would hook him to a chain to let him run outside in the backyard if he had to go outside. When he was done with his business, he would come ring the doorbell to inform us he was ready to be let back in." --Reddit
